Fire!!!! Safety First..

I thought this would be a perfect time to incorporate some Summertime fire safety tips and also show appreciation to my lovely husband who has been a proud Firefighter/EMT for over 6yrs. I always tell my husband  he's my hero and I mean that in every sense of the word! The pictures below are from a 3 alarm fire he worked over the weekend.

Fire Safety Tips

Grilling
  • Grills should be positioned away from deck railings and sidings
  • Keep children and pets at least 3ft away from grill area
  • Grills (propane & charcoal) should only be used outdoors. Never on a balcony or patio of an apt or condo complex
  • Periodically remove grease or fat buildup in trays below the grill so it cannot be ignited by a hot grill.
  • Charcoal grill: Once the fire has started, never add starter fluid
Home/Apartment/Condo
  •  If there is a grease fire in your kitchen, throwing water on the fire will only make it worse. Use baking soda or flour if you have to. Best thing to do is to turn off the appliance and let it cool off. If it’s an oven, keep the door shut. Opening the door will let in more oxygen and intensify the fire.
  • Buy appliances that have an automatic shutoff function
  • Get chimeny's checked annually and smoke/CO2 detectors tested monthly
  • Use power strips, don't overload your circuits
  • Don't run electrical wires under rugs

That Husband of Mine doing what he does!
Family Safety
  • Fires are scary and kids have a tendency to hide. Make sure you reiterate DON'T HIDE, GO OUTSIDE
  • Keep a Fire Extinguisher on hand (preferably in kitchen) replace once a year even if never used
  • To escape Fall & Crawl it's easier to breathe when staying low to the ground
  • Touch door with back of hand to test if door is hot before opening
  • STOP, DROP and ROLL if your clothes are on fire
  • Keep flashlight close to bed
  • In the instance that you have a burn place in COOL water for 15mins (NOT cold)
  • Plan and practice an escape plan with your family. Find TWO ways out of every room in case one way is blocked by fire or smoke. Practice escaping by both routes to be sure windows are not stuck and screens can be taken out quickly.
  • Place stickers and magnets with emergency numbers on your refrigerator and every telephone in the house.
Hope this was helpful! Sharing is caring.. a lot of fires are avoidable.
